Richard Scarry + Little Dumplings

New piece for The Boston Globe, to accompany a write-up about Richard Scarry! The article analyzed the changes made to Busytown between the late 60s and early 90s to correspond with the growing urban economy and gender role shifts. Here are a few [pictures] to point out some subtle and hilarious differences. Thanks again to Dan Zedek for the awesome assignment.

And on the topic of children's imagery: some of you might know that aside from making illustrations, I also teach Mandarin to babies a couple of days a week. (The class is called Little Dumplings.) It is a very different job, but there are some overlaps. For every class, I create some sort of craft for the babies to "make". (This basically means I execute about 95% of the craft and they put a sticker on it.) I thought it would be fun to share some of them, so you can all get a sense of my range.

Also, through experience, I have found that if you put a googly eye on anything, it is instantly cute! Go on, try it.

Boston Globe

Last week I was called to do the Arts and Movies section covers for The Boston Globe. I basically had to find a cohesive way to illustrate a split list of artsy events and movies(Harry Potter!). We decided it would be cool to do two dioramas, with the finals pieces photographed. This was a rush job(two and a half days, sketch to finish), but I'm really happy with the results. Big thanks to Dan Zedek and Ryan Huddle, and an even bigger thanks to the amazing Lia Post for helping me take fancy photos!

Quentin vs. Coen

I have a new piece in a show at Bold Hype Gallery, which opens tonight. The theme is "Quentin vs. Coen", and each artist is asked to make artwork inspired by either a Tarantino or Coen brothers movie. I think it is obvious which scene I chose. The show is only up for three days, so go check it out if you can! I am looking forward to seeing all the artwork in one space, feeling claustrophobic, and maybe spotting more people from "Work of Art".

Another hiatus! I'll be posting a lot of old and new things over the next few weeks, starting now: I made three letters for a show at Gallery Hijinks, called The Letter Collector. The show just ended, but you can still purchase artwork through their site. I think "H" is still up for grabs. This will definitely be the beginning of more type/letter experimentation!

I have a new scanner!! And other news:

I had a piece in a show this weekend called The Box Which Contains The World, as part of Arts in Bushwick's BETA Spaces festival. Each artist was given a 10.5x10.5in wooden box to modify. I printed textures onto paper and made a layered collage/diorama. My first time working this way! It was a lot of fun to make, and will also be the beginning of a top secret future project. Thanks to the indefatigable Ali Aschman for putting the show(and the whole festival!) together. Truly impressive.

Last week I gave a demo in Josh Cochran's Illustration Concepts class at Parsons, and this is what was printed. Maybe not the most concept-y image for a concept class, but most of the focus was on process and technique. Thanks to Josh for inviting me, it's been a while since I witnessed a real crit!

Ok. Epic post time. It's been a downright batty past few weeks and as a result, I haven't felt much like sharing. But here's me sucking it up! 5 updates on my life:

1) I have an illustration in the new October issue of PlanSponsor. Healthcare = shifting/shared burden. Thanks, SooJin!

2) Greenpoint Open Studios happened. Thanks to all the nice folks who stopped by to say hello!

3) Speaking of studios, here is mine:

I kind of love it, even though it is not the most luxurious space. Top three things to be happy about: NOBODY is here during the day, guys from the furniture studio downstairs give me tons of scrap wood, and there is a very friendly dog that occasionally visits! Top three things to avoid: going to the bathroom sans toilet paper, leaving pastries unattended on your desk, going to the upper building levels at night(raccoons rule after sundown). That said, everyone should come visit.

4) Jing is now drawing people. Made two portraits for the upcoming issue of Yeti Magazine. One is of the author Amelia Gray, and the other of the band Endless Boogie. I highly recommend everyone to pick up a copy, it's a pretty rad publication. Thanks to Mike McGonigal!

New print for Faesthetic #13, the 10th anniversary issue. Colors for this one were black and purple, and the theme was LUCK. Keep an eye out for it next month. Should be a good issue. Thanks to Dustin Hostetler for inviting me to contribute!

I printed from both sides of the block this time, so the layers did not register perfectly. (Only the last guy was "lucky" enough to be printed with no overlap.) I kind of like it, but will probably end up going back and carving away the extra purple areas.

I have three illustrations in the newest issue of Bitch magazine. Black & white with spot color. This was my first time adding color digitally, and I think it worked out pretty well?

The first article was a Q&A with an ex-exotic dancer who is now an advocate for other dancers. In the interview, she talks about issue of racial lap dance discrimination.

The second article was about women's increasing involvement in the Tea Party movement. The AD wanted all text for this one.

The third article was about "tech crafting". Tech crafting = electronics + knitting/crafting.

Tiny Showcase

New letterpress/graphic design/PRINTMAKING book from Gestalten! I highly recommend getting it, not just because my woodcuts occupy one of the pages, but because the whole thing is filled with gorgeous, mind-boggling artwork. Big thanks to Henni Hellige, way over in Berlin. This is an excellent addition to my bookshelf.

Off the Strip

I have a piece in an upcoming show at WWA Gallery, called Off the Strip. Artists were asked to reinterpret a comic character/story from the Sunday pages. About a year ago, I received an email from Jonathan Heaps, a nice philosophy grad from Boston, asking me if he could incorporate some of my work into a 3/4 sleeve tattoo. Basically he would be combining imagery from three different pieces and changing the orientation of some of the characters, while trying to remain faithful to the original design. I gave him permission, and here are the results:

Just made a print for issue #6 of UPPERCASE Magazine, to go along with an article about animals with mobile homes. One of the animals listed was the veined octopus, who likes to hang out in abandoned coconut shells(and possibly drink beer and eat cheese puffs). The whole project went swimmingly, thanks to Janine Vangool. She also asked me to document different stages of the print, so here are some more process photos!

Drawing Inspiration: Visual Artists at Work

This is a really late post, but I just received a copy of The Drawing Inspiration, an illustration textbook that I contributed to in my last year at RISD. Now reading what I wrote, it is clear I should have been heavily edited/not trusted to give illustration advice before I ever even started freelancing! Gallery Nucleus - Curiouser and Curiouser

Just finished a new print for a group show at Gallery Nucleus called Curiouser and Curiouser, where artists contribute work based on Alice in Wonderland. Thanks to Lin Shi for inviting me to be a part of this. Show opens on February 27th, and will be up for a month. (Concept art and stills from the new Tim Burton movie will also be shown on opening night.)

Overall, this piece was pretty challenging to make ... it's hard to reinterpret something that has already been reinterpreted for over a century! I think the colors came out a bit muddy in the end, but maybe people will just think I'm going for a "muted" look?

Brownstones to Red Dirt Postcard

Recently I was asked to participate in a charity auction called the Brownstones to Red Dirt Postcard Art Benefit. "Brownstones to Red Dirt" is a feature-length documentary made by the people at Blue Sky Studios, about a pen pal program between a group of sixth graders in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and orphans from the war in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The postcard auction is an extension of the film, with proceeds going toward the construction of a library for the kids in Bed-Stuy(which is also my neighborhood) and a school for the kids in Freetown.

All the artists were mailed a thin birch wood postcard to modify. This was my first stab at printing on wood, and it turned out to be pretty neat. So neat I may even do it again!

Last week I made an opener and 5 spots for the February issue of American Way, the in-flight magazine for American Airlines. The article was about authentic Italian cooking and its inimitable results, which is largely dependent on the quality of the ingredients. I have to say, I was pretty psyched to draw these little hams and tortellis. Best subject matter ever! Thanks to Betsy Semple for making the whole project go so smoothly.

Cincinnati Magazine

I've been a blogging fiend this month!! Just barely met another deadline yesterday for the December issue of Cincinnati Magazine -- 3 simple spot illustrations for an article about pesky bugs. They will appear in the magazine in the style of trading cards(think Garbage Pail Kids), listing fun facts in various categories.

The bugs they chose were head lice, bed bugs, and crab lice. Though the research for crab lice was less than pleasant, I loved the concept of the whole thing. And on the plus side, I already knew a ton about bed bugs, being a Brooklyn resident and all. Thanks to AD Grace Saunders and writer Ian Aldrich, for giving me the challenge of cutening up these little critters. (I do wish I had taken more time to think about the colors, but I guess sometimes you just have to live and learn that salmon = no.)

McSweeney's

Last week I was asked to make an illustration for the upcoming McSweeney's Quarterly, accompanying a letter by Zev Borow. I've been a big McSweeney's fan for a while, so this was an extra-great assignment, even though it was a fast turnaround -- Friday to Sunday, from sketch to finish. So that was pretty much my weekend(that and watching Rosanne Barr get sweet revenge in "She Devil"). The issue comes out next month, and will take the form of a full-scale newspaper. More info can be found on their website. Major thanks to Brian McMullen for contacting me. It was tons-o-fun to make, and I got to try out a new technique!

Der Freitag

Just finished 3 prints for a special illustration-heavy issue of Der Freitag, a publication based in Berlin. It will be distributed at the Franfurt Book Fair and Illustrative Festival this week.

The deadline was pretty tight: 3 pieces from sketch to finish, in under 48 hours! I liked the challenge, but it did feel extremely rushed. (In the future, it would be great if someone is around to stop me when I decide it is a good idea to start carving a German village at 3 in the morning.) The subject matter was China(the guest of honor at this year's fair) and the growing status of its publishing industry --- popular translated literature, cheap/bootleg books, etc. Which = pandas reading things. Thanks to Janine Sack and Corinna Koch for including me in this project.

The Believer

Hey! The October issue of The Believer is finally out, which includes 8(?) of my black and white illustrations. Big, big thanks to Andrew Leland for running all the pieces and putting up with my constant badgering. (And thanks also to Ed Park for helping me badger.) It's really awesome to see the work next to Charles Burns and Tony Millionaire's drawings, as well as Louis C.K.'s offensive ranting. Go pick up a copy, or see the images for free here. Or see them for free in a bookstore! Plenty of possibilities.

Other life things that have happened in the past month:
-Moved to a new apartment in Bed-Stuy. (No more treehouse)
-Started the new school year of Little Dumplings, a preschool I teach at in the UWS.

One was an opener, for an article about the increasing trend in neighbors bartering, selling and buying homegrown produce for fruit gathered in their own backyards. (Ex. The other was a spot, for an article about the comparison between bones of omnivorous women and bones of Buddhist nuns. Apparently there is no real health difference, which means being vegan does not necessarily increase your risk of brittle bones. Although these nuns were suspected to have consumed large amounts of soybean, which helps? (Happy bones on two-bone bicycle = Fun times for all)

The "Talking Trees" piece for 5280 will be part of the AI web gallery in November. This is the first year I've submitted to AI, and I'm happy to be given a spot on the site amongst the 8,000+ submissions! Hopefully I'll sneak my way into the book sometime in the future.

Couple o projects in progress. More updates later in blog. The best news for now is, the weather is finally nice! I am already working on consuming smoothies at an inhuman rate.

So recently, some people have been emailing me about selling prints of my work online. One is Gallery Nucleus, the gallery that put on the SILA Illustration West 47 show. For copyright protection, I had to get rid of the text on the popsicle piece, but here it is:

Last night I went to see Mt St Helens Vietnam Band at the Bowery Ballroom. The show was impressive, and I was tickled to find out they're also awesome human beings! Go and support them, they deserve it.

It was also cool seeing the merch table, with my artwork on every conceivable promotional item, from buttons to shirts to bars of soap!

One of two prints for Gallery 1988's "Idiot Box" show in LA. The opening is on April 2nd, and will be hosted by Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell. The theme is guilty pleasure TV shows, and each artist is asked to make artwork reinterpreting their favorites. So for anyone who is wondering, here is what the Golden Girls would look like as a bunch of confused seals.

Society of Illustrators NY and LA

Just found out that two of my pieces were accepted for the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles 47 catalog and show, and one for New York. The show in LA will open at Gallery Nucleus on March 28th and the reception for the New York show will be on May 8th at the Museum of American Illustration. All three prints were made in the spring.

Three of my prints were used this past week to dress Melissa Rivers' fake apartment on Z Rock, an IFC television show. Thanks to my friend Sarah for this fun and bizarre opportunity, and putting me in touch with Tyler Rosen, the production designer. The episode airs sometime in June.

In other news, I've been working on a pilot for Adult Swim with an unbelievably awesome crew of people. Things have been really hectic the past few weeks, and it was refreshing to make a new print in full color.

Here are three blocks for a new series in progress. The images are reversed in the final prints, and the bear has his eye back.

This might be the end of my relationship with MDF boards, as I recently realized that MDF dust is EXTREMELY TOXIC. I think I always knew, but was just too wooed by the cheapness and easy-to-cut-ness to worry about long term health effects. Better late than never?

Red Bellies at Dawn!

I have a new home now. It's in Brooklyn, and we are excited. (We = Colin, Morgan, Charlie, me, Groover, Tiger Power)

Within an hour of our arrival, we were warned by several neighbors about potential bedbugs, sending us into a paranoid frenzy. As a result, the past five days have been spent spraying for bedbugs, caulking and sealing every crack in the house, and making epic late-night journeys to Home Depot. In addition to painting, unpacking, buying many bagels in exchange for internet, more caulking, and getting into a car accident with the Budget truck.

And here it is, with all of our mountains of crap. Kindly referred to as "Ewok Village," and more recently, "Caulk City."
